My past three years of high school have not been horrible, but they haven’t been completely wonderful either. My freshmen year was by far the easiest, I didn’t struggle in my core classes so much and my elective classes were a breeze. I occasionally struggled with teachers not returning my work back on time and expecting me to revise the work instantly, but with the help of my AVID teacher I managed to get around those problems and do a few level four projects in all of my classes. My sophomore year on the other hand became more challenging. Aside from the core classes I had taken my sophomore year, I now had to take a language course and a world history course. The courses were not as challenging as I assumed they would be, I finished two years of Spanish in one school year and I finished world history ahead of time and with an overall grade of a 4.
My junior year was nothing like the previous two years, I had a new AVID teacher, with new rules, new students, many new challenges and I had decided to join the school’s tennis team. AVID alone became a bit overwhelming, aside from that I was taking Chemistry, Algebra 2, AP US History, and AP Language and Composition. I also decided to take on another challenge and I joined the Migrant Speech and Debate club, I worked on my speeches all second semester and tried my best to memorize them, but I also had to study for both my AP exams and the SAT. Time management was crucial my junior year, if i had not managed to learn how to use my time wisely and effectively, I would have not been able to finish any of my classes on time.
Algebra II was a big obstacle my junior year, but I managed to find help from friends that were either ahead of me or that had already taken the class. Before I knew it, I was one of those students; on pace or ahead of the class and helping my peers.
Towards the end of junior year my schedule became more chaotic, club meetings and activities, AVID field trips and activities, studying for two AP exams and the SAT, and the pressure of finishing all my other classes on time as well as getting all the level fours I could to bring up my GPA. Reflecting on my junior year, all the hard work paid off. I received a grade of a three point five or a four in most of my classes, I placed second for extemporaneous speech, I was ranked third in my class, and I learned both life lessons and new skills that will help me become both a better person and a better student. Struggling to manage my time brought me to where I am today, a well-rounded student that manages time wisely and uses that time efficiently in order to finish all the tasks at hand as well as having the courage to assume leadership positions in my classes.
